We've all found ourselves in outdoor situations without the proper attire in the event of rain, snow, wind, bugs, or extreme heat. I've put together this guide to give you all an idea of what to wear and when. In this section you'll find photos of my hiking outfits along with where you can purchase a few of the clothing items.
I've also included a few of my favorite accessories to wear while hiking (e.g. hats, socks, bandannas). Please keep in mind that a lot of my clothes are thrifted or I have had them for years. So, although I will try my best, I may not be able to list the purchasing information for all items.
This simple fit is one of my favorites for a summer hike. The focal point of this particular outfit would be the green button up top. It is light weight, quick dry, and offers UV protection with UPF 50. You can never go wrong with sun protection during the summer months. This is especially important at higher elevations where the sun exposure is more intense, therefore you have more of a risk of heat exhaustion, sun burn, or heat rash. Shorts can be refreshing, but always opt for longer pants on trails you're unfamiliar with, in case of thick brush containing poisonous plants or thorns.
In extreme winter weather it is important to layer up and make sure your outer layer is waterproof (including shoes). Hats, mittens, and a pair of thick socks are essential in preventing frost bite. Try to avoid cotton for base layers, go for wool instead! Tucking your under shirt into your pants helps keep the cold air out and your body heat in. Insulated winter gear with the option to fasten around the ankles and wrists is recommended for hiking at this time of year. I prefer to wear my snow pants when hiking below 20°F.
These boots are by far my favorite shoes to hike in. When searching for the right hiking shoes, three features you should prioritize are good traction, ankle support, and light weight. These are important aspects in a hiking shoe because you don't want a heavy clunky boot weighing you down or making you less agile. Traction is always your friend while hiking, especially in case of loose or slippery rocks on the trail. Ankle support allows you to safely take on those unforgiving trails while minimizing the risk of a sprain.
I rarely wear hats that do not have some sort of statement on them. Honestly, I wear this one more often than I'd like to admit. The creator of this embroidered dad cap is Seek Refuge. Each item made by this brand supports refugee rights not only through representation but donations as well. Seek Refuge donates 20% of each purchase to refugee aid organizations. Through this, the brand has donated $50,000 to the cause thus far. The embroidered English text reads "Support Refugees", under this statement, "Seek Refuge" is written in Arabic text (Modern Standard).
